Just a few short years ago, Online Recipe and Entertaining sites like Simply Recipes were the end all be all of Online Recipe and Entertaining sites. With a keen emphasis on stockpiling, archiving and organizing recipes, these sites quickly gained a substantial following. Unfortunately, with a stronger emphasis being placed on culinary appeal, community features and resources the last few years, Simply Recipes lacks the accoutrement to make its detailed recipe archive stand out or even digest easily, and only serves to demonstrate the strength of other Online Recipe and Entertaining sites like Epicurious, Chow and Food & Wine.

Recipe Archive and Organization:   Excellent

Simply Recipes major strength rests in its detailed, well-organized recipe listing and search features. Though Simply Recipes lacks an advanced search bar, its side-bar categories listing allows for quick and convenient recipe searches through a variety of criteria.

Culinary Appeal:   Excellent

Simply Recipes major strength rests in its detailed, well-organized recipe listing and search features. Though Simply Recipes lacks an advanced search bar, its side-bar categories listing allows for quick and convenient recipe searches through a variety of criteria.

Community:   Excellent

Though Simply Recipes provides a free “Recipe of the Day” email subscription, there is nothing else that could be considered a community feature. Though this deficiency remains true to its namesake, featuring recipes alone greatly diminishes the potential of the site.

Resources:   Excellent

Aside from a dozen or so how-to guides, Simply Recipes offers no resources to assist users with the preparation and production of their recipes. While the recipes themselves are very instructional, lacking features as simple as recipe feedback and ratings, or as complex as technique videos and podcasts, can make getting the recipe from the page to the plate a difficult task.

Help/Support:   Excellent

Simply Recipes offers no technical support to its users, lacking features as commonplace as a sitemap and FAQ page. Worse, no contact information is available for non-advertisers, making site feedback and other inquiries impossible.

Summary:

Simply Recipes shouldn’t be written off by any means. It has a solid foundation that has been based on its recipe-only approach. However, lacking true culinary appeal, community features, resources and technical support options makes this site seem very incomplete and seriously outdated. For a true, contemporary Online Recipe and Entertaining site, look to Epicurious, Chow and Food & Wine.
